Former Wisconsin defenseman Jamie McBain has been called up by the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. McBain will be available to play tonight when the Hurricanes host the Boston Bruins at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
McBain played three seasons at Wisconsin and left school as a first team All-American, a WCHA Player of the Year, and as a Hobey Baker finalist. McBain joins a long, elite list of former Wisconsin defenseman to don an NHL sweater. Wisconsin defense alumni currently playing in the NHL: McBain, Chris Chelios, Tom Gilbert, Ryan Suter, Davis Drewiske, and Brian Rafalski.
McBain has played 68 games this season for Carolina's AHL affiliate in Alabany, NY. Through 68 games, the blueliner from Edina, Minnesota has recorded 40 points (7, 33). McBain is second on the team in scoring and third on the team in plus/minus.
McBain led the Badgers in scoring last year from the blueline with 37 points. He was named the WCHA Player of the Year in large part for winning the league scoring title. McBain is only the second defenseman in WCHA history to lead the league in scoring.
UPDATE: McBain registered his first NHL point when he assisted on an Erik Cole powerplay tally.
