Burish Signs With Stars; Stepan Makes It Official

The flamboyant, energetic, quotable pest that every Badger fan loves, Adam Burish, has signed a free agent contract with the Dallas Stars. The deal is set to pay the former Wisconsin captain $1 million in 2010-2011 and $1.3 million in 2011-2012.

"There was a bunch of teams interested," Burish said. "It was a little overwhelming. I've never gone through this before. I was in the gym kind of working out and by 11:20 [a.m. CT] teams had been calling my agent. There were like five or six."

Burish would have loved to stay with Stanley Cup Champion Chicago but became a victim of the the salary cap crunch. The expected 59 million dollar salary cap is actually 55 million for Chicago next season who is penalized for going over the cap with bonuses from last seasons playoffs. With the expensive deals of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Marian Hossa, and Brian Campbell already on the books, the Hawks have been forced to trade away, or let go in free agency a lot of mid level players who will be replaced with players expected to make around the league minimum so that they can sneak in under the cap and still keep their high end players like Patrick Sharp.

"He's a hard-nosed kid and very hard to play against," Stars general manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. "He plays with a lot of energy and pulls people into the fight with him. He skates really well and works hard. The games I watched in the playoffs, he was the first guy in on the forecheck and finished with authority." Nieuwendyk sees Burish as a third-line winger or a fourth-line winger or center.

Wisconsin's leading scorer last season Derek Stepan has officially signed with the New York Rangers. Per NHL rules, the Rangers were forced to wait until July 1st to officially announce the signing even though they had a deal in place weeks ago.

According to the website CapGeek.com, Stepan will have a cap hit of $820,333 for the three years on his entry level contract. Officially he will receive $712,500 if he is in the NHL this season, and $875,000 if he is in the NHL for the next two seasons. Additionally, per the terms of the CBA, he will receive a signing bonus of $87,500 each of the next three seasons weather is in the NHL or not. Stepans salary in the AHL next season will be $65,000.

Stepan, 20, served as captain of Team USA at the 2010 World Junior Championships, leading the United States to a gold medal. He led all skaters in assists (10) and points (14) in seven games en route to being named to the tournament All-Star Team, as selected by the media.

This season, Stepan scored 12 goals and 42 assists and had 8 penalty minutes in 41 games with the University of Wisconsin. He established career-highs in games played, goals, assists, points and penalty minutes. Stepan ranked among the NCAA leaders in several scoring categories, finishing tied for first in the nation in assists and ranked second in points. He also led the WCHA in points, assists and power play assists (22), and tied for fifth in power play points (23). The second-year player led his team in assists and points, tied for third in game-winning goals (3) and seventh in goals while surpassing the 40-assist and 50-point marks for the first time in his collegiate career.

Burish & Blackhawks play for Lord Stanley's Cup

This shouldn't be news to anyone who reads this blog, but the Stanley Cup Finals are set, and another Badger has a chance to etch his name onto Lord Stanley's Cup.

Adam Burish and the Blackhawks will begin the final leg of the quest for the Cup on saturday night in Chicago against the Philadelphia Flyers. I will be cheering hard for the 'Hawks, because I like them and I hate the Flyers.

For future reference, here is the Finals schedule:

Theoretically there is a chance for 3 Badgers to etch their name on the Cup should the 'Hawks win. Jack Skille and Jake Dowell are both on the playoff roster, but as Andy Baggot points out they'd have to play in a Finals game, which is rather unlikely. Adam Burish only played in 13 regular season games (a player needs to play in at least 41 regular season games), but should certainly be in the lineup when the Finals begin; so if the 'Hawks are winners, Burish will be immortalized on the greatest trophy in professional sports, for all time.

Wisconsin All-Decade Team

Lot of talk at different blogs and websites about different All-Decades teams from conferences and things like that. I eventually plan on doing an All-Decade team for the WCHA but for today we'll settle for the Wisconsin All-Decade team.

Something like this is very tough to do because your basically creating your own criteria here. Do you go for the best career? Do you go with each players best individual season? It's really a tough thing. I wrestled with a lot of ideas and players and decided to take each players best individual season into account when making the list. Also, since I'm making the rules, I included the 1999-2000 season in here because I simply could not leave Rhino off the list. He may have gotten screwed for the Hobey but he's not getting screwed here.

Wisconsin Player of the decade: Goaltender Brian Elliott

Flat out, Brian Elliott won Wisconsin the 2006 National Championship. There were pieces on that team that could be replaced and we still would have won, but not Elliott. Elliott had the best season I've personally ever had a chance to be around for a goaltender. His stats were flat out sick that season. A 1.55 GAA and .938 Save percentage is absolutely ridiculous. The team was 27-5-3 when he was in goal, and 3-5 when he wasn't. 2 of those losses for Elliott were immediately after he came back from a knee injury on the road. In my opinion, this was a simple decision.

Adam Burish Back In Action Tonight?

For those poor unfortunate souls who find themselves cheering for the Blackhawks, you'll be happy to know that Adam "Yes, I Have Some Captain In Me" Burish may be making his return from a tough knee injury tonight. He would be suiting up against fellow UW Alumni and former captain Davis Drewiske and the Los Angeles Kings. Coach Joel Quenneville has been quoted to say that "[Burish has] put himself ... in game shape and we're targeting Wednesday" (source). ESPN.com's player profile for Burish quotes Quenneville as saying he could play tonight, citing the official Blackhawks website, but I can't find the link and I've got to get to work.

As you may recall, he suffered a serious knee injury (torn ACL- ouch) back in September. Congratulations to Adam for coming such a relatively quick comeback.

EDIT: He's in the lineup tonight. I hope he gets a nice ovation from the United Center crowd.

Adam Burish on ESPN Milwaukee

I heard Homer from ESPN Milwaukee interview Adam Burish ("Oh Captain, My Captain") on my drive home from work yesterday. Adam's a great interview, so it's always nice to hear him talk. He talks breifly about his upcoming return (probably Sunday afternoon against the Red Wings, which will be on NBC) and about his experience having Blackhawks teammates on both sides of last Sunday's gold medal game.

More Info On the UW Practice Facility

Andy Baggot, who I admit not always agreeing with is doing a good job covering this situation with the athletic facility that was designed to be used as a practice facility for mens hockey and a practice and 2,400 seat game facility for womens hockey. He spoke with coach Eaves and with captain of the 2006 National Champion Wisconsin Badgers Adam Burish tonight.

(I apogize in advance, most of this is from Baggot. Everything in italics if from Baggots article. I don't have much to add I just thought he had a lot of good info and wanted to share it with anyone who had not seen it)

The announcement Tuesday prompted discouraged expressions from those affected by the delay, starting with UW men’s coach Mike Eaves. “It is disappointing,” he said. “There’s no question about that.”

But even more than wanting to hear from Eaves, I wanted to hear from a former players, who Alvarez ripped in the media about stepping up on this project.

Here are some quotes from Adam Burish who donated money to the project: “I’m very disappointed and frustrated with how this whole process has been approached and run,” he wrote, without elaboration, in an e-mail.

Burish, who plays in the NHL with the Chicago Blackhawks, wrote that he felt sorry for Eaves and his staff “who have put effort into this and held up their end of the bargain by putting a winning product on the ice, and then a promise isn’t kept to them.”

Coach Eaves also had some comments on what the possible next step is: “Now we have to find, ‘OK, what are our action steps? What can we control to get it off the shelf and get it going again?”

Asked if he had any ideas in that regard, Eaves responded in a frustrated tone. “I’ve got a lot running around in my head right now, but I’ve got to decipher them and sift them out a little bit and see which action steps are the right ones to do,” he said.

Alumni Updates

Robbie Earl:

Ever since not getting picked up off waivers (more on that in a bit), Earl has made the most of his limited ice time. Two goals in two games has been drawing some raves from west of the St. Croix. This is especially notable considering that he's getting less than nine minutes of ice time (he got less than 7:00 against Detroit), and also considering that he's mostly playing on the fourth line. Not easy to score a goal when you spend most of the game paired with Andrew Ebbett and Derek "Good Lord, That Man Was Sired By A Moose" Boogaard. It definately seems like he's starting to find a groove that he was unable to get in Toronto. What once seemed like a career AHLer is finding ways to be a serviceable third and fourth liner.

In either case, he's getting some very favorable press in St. Paul. Wild beat writer Michael Russo had this to say:

And, 29 GM's should get fired today. These 29 men could have had Robbie Earl for jack squat Wednesday when he was on waivers. In the two games since, the former Wisconsin Badger's got two goals -- and now five in 15. I'm no math genius, but that puts him on pace for 27.33333333333333333 goals over an 82-game season.

He also brought speed, physicality and a helped draw a double minor from Derek Dorsett. The Wild's 9-0-1 the past 10 games Earl's in the lineup, and 10-3-2 overall when he plays. He's a difference maker!!!

Brian Elliott:

One of the greatest Badger goalies of all time had one of the greatest weeks of his professional career last week, winning four games in four starts- a streak that included a stretch of three games in four days. It was enough to earn the NHL First Star of the week last week.

He was lights out with a .957 SV%, 1.26 GAA and allowing only 5 goals. I caught the end of an interview with Els on Hockey Central, and so far I haven't seen it on Versus.com or on Youtube. I'll keep an eye out for it, but in the meantime, here's a WTF save Elliott made against Marian Hossa after the puck took a WTF bounce off the endboards:

Late Tuesday Update: Schultz Makes Grades

Badger fans can rest easy, Justin Schultz apparently did what he needed to do to stay eligible tonight according to Baggot's update tonight.

According to Baggot Eaves refused to get into details but said "a perfect storm happened.''

Schultz, a freshman defenseman from West Kelowna, British Columbia is having a solid freshman season for the Badgers. He has recorded two goals and seven assists while playing in all 22 games for the Badgers this season.

Former Badger forward and 2006 National Champion Robbie Earl was placed on waivers by the Minnesota Wild today.

From the article: In most cases, a player who passes through waivers either remains with the club or would be assigned to Houston of the AHL. For instance, Robbie Earl was placed on waivers Tuesday, but he practiced with the Wild and will either stay or be assigned to Houston if he clears.

Earl has had some success with the Wild this season. In extremely limited playing time, Earl recorded three goals in thirteen games.

The opening night of the inaugural "Showdown in Titletown" had an interesting twist. Two teams that many had pegged for the Championship game Saturday both lost tonight. Fourth ranked Eau Claire Memorial lost 3-2 on home ice to second ranked Wasau West. Over in Stevens Point, the undefeated and number one ranked team in the state Green Bay Notre Dame was upset by S.P.A.S.H. 5-2. Wausau West plays the winner of the Fond du Lac/Appleton matchup and S.P.A.S.H. plays the winner of the Madison Edgewood/Waukesha Catholic Memorial tilt.

Ok so this isn't really news but I think it's funny regardless. There is this little link at the bottom of the blog where you can see the website statistics with how many people per day are viewing the blog and what not. You can also see how people accessed the site, through links or google searching or whatever.

I just noticed that someone found our blog today by trying to find out whether or not Adam Burish is married. I can tell you that as far as I know, Burish is not married, but maybe someone else can confirm that. This is not the weirdest search I've seen that someone got to our blog though. In the last couple of weeks someone found us by trying to find out if assistant Waterloo Black Hawks coach Shane Fukushima is married. Good luck with that.

Big Ten Network to Debut Pre- and Post-Game Hockey Shows in January
Former Badger, current Blackhawk Adam Burish to rotate as analyst

CHICAGO – The Big Ten Network is enhancing its live coverage of men’s ice hockey this season with the addition of pregame, intermission and post-game shows in conjunction with its Friday and Saturday telecasts in January, February and March.

Overall, the network is quadrupling its live men’s ice hockey coverage with the studio shows, nine telecasts and more than 20 live streamed games in 2009-10.

In addition, the network has added a pair of former WCHA stars to its lineup, including former University of Wisconsin captain and current Chicago Blackhawks winger Adam Burish and former Golden Gopher and retired NHL veteran Darby Hendrickson.

Burish and Hendrickson will rotate as studio analysts for the network’s pre- and post-game shows when they debut in January. Each will work alongside studio host Rick Pizzo, who played goaltender at the NCAA Division III level.

Burish, a native of Madison, Wis., captained the Badgers’ 2006 national championship team and assisted on both goals in the Badgers’ 2-1 victory in the national championship game against Boston College. A four-year NHL veteran, Burish is currently sidelined with a torn ACL in his knee and isn’t expected to rejoin the Blackhawks until April.

Now, we should probably all shout with joy. Not just for Burish (who, by the way, is PERFECTLY suited for this kind of gig), but because we're actually seeing a sign that the BTN might actually give a rip about hockey. This is the same network that in its first year of operation mysteriously cancelled its coverage of one game between the Badgers and the Gophers, then pre-empted an absurd amount of the other game in the series because of a press conference for when Indiana's basketball coach got fired. The BTN's coverage of college hockey has been lackluster at best. Despite the great quality of the Big Ten hockey programs themselves (ok... everyone but OSU), there hasn't exactly been a lot of coverage, much less quality coverage being thrown hockey's way.

Not that we shouldn't be taking this with an appropriate grain of salt (it is the BTN after all...), but you'd have to think that even just PROMOTING the games for a change would be a huge step forward. Seriously, when's the last time you saw a hockey promo on the BTN? Now, they're suddenly quadrupling the amount of games covered AND throwing together what looks to be an interesting pre and post game show? I love it. Even if it still ends up being not as good as the coverage the stupid goofs get from FSN-Mn, this is still a major improvement, and we have to appreciate that.

• Second City Hockey (Oct 26): It was nice to see the fourth line generate a little bit of pressure and physicality tonight, with Jake Dowell getting into an obligatory scrap with Shane Hnidy

• Chicago Blackhawks Examiner (Oct 26): Jake Dowell should stay up in Chicago, even when Toews comes back. Working a rotation with Fraser, Ebbett and Dowell would bode well for the Hawks, who can chose for a player based on the team they would be playing and the level of physicality. If Dowell, the Rockford IceHogs captain, is too valuable to the AHL to be kept up as an NHL scratch, then the Hawks should call up a player like Rob Klinkhammer or Bryan Bickell to fill the role of de-facto enforcer and fourth liner. Also, I sure hope that Jonathan Toews and Brent Seabrook don't need as much time as Ben Eager to recover from a concussion. I understand that the Eager has a history of concussion problems, but Jake Dowell's AHL/NHL status might as well be how Ben Eager is feeling that day. If it's bad, Dowell is in the NHL, good, Dowell is in the AHL. Overall, I'm not sure why the Blackhawks don't put a timetable on Eager so they can stop stringing players between Rockford and Chicago. Then again, this is the team that refuses to put Adam Burish and Marian Hossa on the long term injury lists, so logic isn't exactly first priority.

• Fifth Feather (Oct 25): The much maligned Hawks fourth line put together a respectable performance with some solid forechecking and pressure. I would venture to guess Jake Dowell will probably get to stick around a bit this time even when Toews returns. Not to take away anything they did tonight, but they were playing Nashville. The true tests will come when they play better teams.

• Jesse Rogers - ESPNChicago (Oct 25): Toughness vs. Fighting. There is a difference. When Toews got lit up at center ice by Willie Mitchell, it once again brought up a decade-old question: Do the Hawks have enough toughness? A heavyweight is nearly meaningless in this day and age. The rules have changed. There really are no more goons. At least not on great teams -- they can't afford to carry them. And I don't mean because of the salary cap.

  I said that when Adam Burish went down, we would start looking back and saying, "Man, we could have used Bur in that situation." I think we can name about four or five situations already. It's not the heavyweight they miss. It's the energy and toughness that Burish and Ben Eager brought last season. They bring that partly because they can skate. Stan Bowman said as much on the Hawks' radio flagship after Saturday's game. He said the Hawks would consider replacing that toughness if they could find someone who can play a regular shift. Bowman said you can't hit what you can't catch, and he's right. Those guys are not as easy to find as you might think.

Dowell reassigned to Rockford / Adam Burish interview

Called up for 1 game with the Hawks last night, Jake Dowell was sent back to Rockford today. Bummer. Rockford's next game is Wed @ Chicago Wolves.

Adam Burish / Jake Dowell

A few days ago, I posted a picture of a father and son who had Dowell posters at the Wolves/Icehogs game in Chicago, and I thought they might like these pictures of Adam Burish and Jake Dowell. Both photos are courtesy of Neil Ament.

I was hoping to hear the story of why Jake is their favorite player, and their wife/mom was kind enough to share it with me, and I gotta tell ya, it's a pretty good story.

Apparently the dad had met Adam Burish and some of the other Hawks at work, and on his son's birthday he happened to be texting Adam. He mentioned it was his son's birthday and asked if Adam might wish him a happy birthday. (On the phone, maybe?) Half an hour later, Adam, Jake, and Brian Campbell showed up at the house and played baseball with the birthday boy and shot Nerf rockets with his sister. Cool birthday for a young hockey player, eh? (Seriously, nice work, guys!)

And as to why Dowell (as opposed to the other 2) became the birthday boy's favorite player? "He's the best baseball player." Excellent! :-)

I might as well take this opportunity to mention that Dowell had 2 assists on Friday (4-1 win over Chicago) and 3 assists on Saturday (4-1 win over Peoria). Nice!

As I mentioned previously, Dowell was named Rockford's captain on Saturday. In the post, I think I mistyped a bit and wasn't clear when I wondered about the implications of him getting the "C", and so I thought I'd take this opportunity to clarify. I had wondered if it implied that the organization didn't see him going anywhere, when what I really meant was that I wondered if it implied that the organization didn't see him moving up to Chicago this season. An important distinction, I think, because I'd hate to give the false impression that I thought the organization didn't see him going anywhere in general. (It was clear in my head when I wrote it.) Given the Hawks depth at F this season, they don't have a lot of room to move guys up right now, and so unfourtunately it's likely that he will be in Rockford for much of this season anyway. And if he's going to be in Rockford anyway, I suppose he might as well have the "C", because I'm sure he's earned it. He's a good player, a good leader, and a hard worker, and it's nice to see that recognized. (Dang, I wish he were in Chicago, though!)

Adam Burish Out For (Most Of) Season

Wasn't able to get to this until now, and I'm sure many of you are already aware, but Adam Burish (he of "Badger Alum, captain of the 2006 title team, Chicago Blackhawks, nearly getting his head chopped off in last year's playoffs, extremely popular among Hawks fans and players alike, and the likely father of about 5,000 children in the greater Chicago area" fame) has suffered a pretty serious ACL injury.

In the first period of a preseason game against the Wild, Burish went into the boards awkwardly and tore his ACL. He doesn't score a lot for Chicago, but is a huge contributor to the team in almost every other way imaginable. As such, his reputation among the Hawks is really impeccable. He will be sorely missed until his (in my opinion, very optimistic) return target date of March 1st.

The main ESPN.com story features a link to a pretty solid Q&A session between Burish and some reporters that I highly recommend listening to. Numerous articles are mentioning that the most likely replacement for Burish on the fourth line is to have Tomas Kopecky take over at center and bring up none other than Madison's own Jack Skille to the wing on the fourth line. I can't find a quote attributed to Hawks coach Joel Quenneville to that effect (the Southtown Star article below claims Quenneville has stated this, but does not quote him). While it hasn't been written, and nothing is assured, I certainly hope that that's the route the Hawks take.

Not as popular of a thought, but just as pleasing for us in Badgerland, is the notion of the other BadgerHawk- Jake Dowell- centering the fourth line. I believe I saw one mention of Dowell somewhere, but I can't recall where at this point. And its late, damnit.
