Fan Events at Women's Frozen Four
From UWBadgers.comMADISON, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin athletic department is pleased to announce several fan events in conjunction with the Badgers' appearance at the 2011 NCAA Women's Hockey Frozen Four in Erie, Pa.
This Thursday, all Badger fans in Erie are invited to Quaker Steak & Lube for a Wisconsin Men's Basketball NCAA watch party at 7 p.m. (ET). Free t-shirts will be available to fans while supplies last, courtesy of the Big Ten Network. Fans will receive free Bucky hats and Badger accessories.
On Friday, Badger fans are invited to the Courtyard by Marriott entrance lobby at 2:30 p.m. (ET) to send the team off before its game against Boston College. Free Badger gear will be available while supplies last to fans in attendance.
If the team advances to Sunday's championship game, Badger fans are invited to join members of the UW Band and Bucky Badger in the entrance lobby of the Courtyard by Marriott at 11:30 a.m. (ET) for a second team send-off in true Wisconsin style.
Following the championship game, please join the Wisconsin women's hockey team at Plymouth Tavern. The team looks forward to celebrating its NCAA Frozen Four appearance with Badger fans in Erie! Plymouth Tavern is located at 1109 State Street, three blocks from Tullio Arena.

On to Lake Erie: Women Advance to Frozen Four
The Men’s season might be done, but the Women’s season still has much to cheer about.
On Saturday evening, in front of several thousand Badgers fans, the UW Women advanced to their 5th Frozen Four in the past six seasons with a 2-1 victory over the Duluth Foreign Legion (DFL). Overall, it was one hell of a good hockey game, even though there was no checking!
The first period was pretty even and the Badgers failed to capitalize on a few nice chances. The DFL was able to change the scoreboard first, w/ a goal late in the period. It came after a penalty ended for the Badgers and was one of those cases where they struggled to clear the puck and you just knew something bad was going to happen.
There was a lot of nervous tension in some of my friends heading into the second period. In case you weren’t aware, the DFL was the last team to beat the Badgers this season, way back in November 2010, and after the NCAA Committee decided that earning the #1 overall seed meant nothing, fans knew the DFL would be a tough out. Instead of getting Dartmouth the actual #8 seed, the Badgers were handed their old rival and defending NCAA champions.
The momentum quickly shifted back to the Badgers in the 2nd period, early on their second PP, Hilary Knight launched a shot from the point, which made it through traffic and past DFL goalie Comrade Kim Martin. Credit the players screening the goalie. Mark Johnson also shifted his lines late in the 1st or early in the 2nd, and put all three Patty Kaz finalists together, creating a dominate line of Knight, Meghan Duggan and Briana Decker. Those three created a lot of nice chances the rest of the game and were complimented well by the 2nd and 3rd lines which overall, the DFL worked hard to keep up with.
The Badgers controlled play through the 2nd and into the 3rd period, when 7:34 in Decker to Knight to Duggan for what would eventually be the game winner. The DFL mounted a late attack and pulled their sieve, but it was too little too late. The Badger Women cleaned up the defensive lapses they were having two weeks back in Verona, Alex Rigsby continues to play well in net, and while the score sheet doesn’t show it, forwards like Madison Packer, Mallory Deluce and Carolyne Prevost had great efforts.
One other event to point out, in the third period after a pileup in front of the DFL net, Comrade Jocelyne Larocque grabbed Knight’s facemask and ripped her helmet off. Not only did Comrade Larocque not get ejected, there wasn’t a single penalty called. I haven’t seen such a bogus officiating job since Randy Schmidt didn’t know how to run a video review at Magness arena costing Matt Ford a tying goal as time expired against Denver in 2008. Unacceptable.
Regardless, the Badger Women are headed back to the Frozen Four. There are A LOT of new faces since their last trip in 2009 where they blew out Mercyhurst, but some of the key kogs to that team are still around and I expect nothing less than #4 being brought home next Sunday. I’m bold enough to say that the Badgers might have faced their toughest game in the quarterfinals. The east coast teams might have nice records, but nothing compares to the top end of the WCHA, and UW is the best of the best. BC, BU and Cornell better be ready to get beat down in Lake Erie, because Duggan/Decker/Knight are ready for the big show.Besides the games, Meghan Duggan should be in line to become the school’s third Patty Kaz, national player of the year, winner! She certainly has the resume. I won’t lie, I’m a little confused how Kelly Stack was a hat trick finalist instead of Hilary Knight. Knight has 9 more goals than the next closest player in NCAA hockey, and 20 more points than Stack. I know I’m biased on this one, but the stats don’t lie. Next season Knight needs to get her community service and charitable work in line, and should be the Badgers 4th Patty Kaz winner, but this year Duggan deserves all the accolades. She is truly the definition of an all around player, and a Badger Great. Duggan, Knight, Decker might not just be a nice line combo, but the next three Patty Kaz winners, if East Coast Bias doesn’t thwart the effort.

Tickets punched; Frozen Four set
This is easily the most unlikely Frozen Four ever I would think.
As Chuck pointed out, Bemidji State just defeated Cornell 4-1 to earn their first Frozen Four berth. I thought Cornell played well early, but the Beavers never went away, and took control in the 3rd period. Congrats to their program!
In the NE Regional Final, Boston U and New Hampshire had an epic battle. New Hampshire was the better team, but a PP goal late in the game off a UNH defender's glove was the difference as BU wins 2-1. Boston is the only higher seed to make it to DC.
So here is the schedule for those heading to DC (see ya there!).

Miami (OH) vs Bemidji State

The craziness continues: Regionals Day 2
Being a higher seed in this year's NCAA Men's Hockey Tourney has turned out to be a kiss of death.
To complete the first round, out in the Northeast Regional, North Dakota see-sawed most of the game w/ New Hampshire, but took a solid two goal lead late into the game. As the higher seed, they didn't win. New Hampshire tied the game w/ tenths of a second left and won not long after into OT 6-5. North Dakota apparently was watching videos of the Badgers blowing late leads this season and losing in OT. At this time I would like to return the comment to the Sioux fan on Kellogg in St. Paul, "I really enjoyed your team's last game of the season."
While this game was on ESPN2, fans didn't get to see it until the 2nd period was underway, but if you were watching you can pat yourself on the back, having witnessed the ending to the longest NCAA Lacrosse game of all time.
In the other NE Regional game, BU bucked the trend and spanked Ohio State 8-3. It was only close (a relative word) because BU was lazy later in the game after going up 6-0. Did Ohio State really belong in the tourney over Wisconsin? BU will take on New Hampshire in an all Hockey East Regional Final tomorrow afternoon.
Over in Grand Rapids at the Midwest Regional, 60 got to see a couple good games. In the early game, Cornell came from behind scoring late in the 3rd period to beat Northeastern 3-2. Later, Notre Dame was taken to the woodshed by Bemidji State. No that is not a typo, BSU won 5-1 over the Losing Irish. I would think this markee win can only help BSU's chances of gaining admission into the WCHA this off season. The Beavers and "Big Red" meet tomorrow evening for a ticket to the Frozen Four.
In the East Regional Final, it sounds like I missed a heck of a game between Air Force and Vermont (due to the lack of ESPNU). In the 2nd OT, Vermont apparently put a puck through the net. After a lengthy review it was determined to indeed be a goal, and Vermont punched the first ticket to DC in a 3-2 win.
In the West Regional Final, Miami (OH) has just defeated Duluth 2-1 to end the WCHA's season and send someone from the CCHA to the Frozen Four. What more is there to say? Not a great year for the WCHA. That rhymes.
I'll update the conference standings tomorrow.

Some big upsets on the 1st day of the NCAA Tourney.
Out in the East Region, Air Force pulled off the biggest upset knocking off Michigan 2-0. I'm not sure if this is on the level w/ Holy Cross taking out minnesota, but it has to be huge for the Academy. In the other game in that region, Vermont cruised past Yale 4-1.
In Minneapolis, about 7 people (5 of who were Denver fans) showed up to watch Denver get rolled by Miami (OH) 4-2. I saw a bunch of this game, and Denver looked horrible. In the night cap, Duluth scored two goals in the last 40 seconds of regulation (including the game tying goal w/ 0.8 sec to play) to send the game into OT and eventually win over Princeton 5-4.
Also hats off to the fair weather gopher fans who can't even take up a few seats in their home arena to cheer on WCHA counterpart Denver, because their Kangas poisoned team didn't make the tourney. While the Kohl Center would have been emptier last year had Wisconsin not made it, I know a lot of Badger fans who still would have shown up to support college hockey.

NCAA Tourney Preview
The NCAA Men’s Hockey Tourney starts tomorrow, so why not take a look at who’s playing. I know a few Badger fans who are headed to Grand Rapids for the Midwest Regional despite the Badgers being the first team out.
Northeast Regional – Manchester, NH hosted by New Hampshire
Boston U (1) vs Ohio State (4)
North Dakota (2) vs New Hampshire (3)
Boston U has been #1 in the polls most of the season, won the regular season HE title and the HE tourney. North Dakota won the MacNaughton but didn’t look good last weekend in St. Paul. New Hampshire is playing at home, always a bonus after a good HE season. Ohio State is the last at-large to make it; they didn’t even make the final weekend of the CCHA playoffs.
I’m picking a BU vs North Dakota Regional Final w/ BU advancing to the Frozen Four. Looking forward to watching this game (should it come to pass) Sunday night. North Dakota is a good team, but which one will show up? The team that lost twice in the 2nd half of the regular season or the team that lost twice last weekend?
East Regional – Bridgeport, CT hosted by Yale
Michigan (1) vs Air Force (4)
Yale (2) vs Vermont (3)
This is an interesting Regional w/ Michigan heading east. I wasn’t overly impressed w/ Michigan when the visited the KC in November, and playing that easy CCHA schedule shouldn’t impress anyone. They were the runners up to Notre Dame in both the regular season and playoffs. Yale won the ECAC playoffs and appears to be on a roll. The one thing about ECAC teams is their schedule is weak. Vermont started the season well, but faded later on, and did not reach the HE semis. Air Force won the AHA regular season and playoff title. They were the talk of college hockey after a fast start which included a win over Colorado College. After losing to Denver the following night, they've came back to earth.
I’m pulling for Air Force, but Michigan should win. Yale is at home and Vermont is reeling. I actually have Yale winning at home in the Regional Final and making the Frozen Four.
West Regional – Minneapolis, MN hosted by minnesota (will Wangas and tDon be serving mini donuts in street clothes?)
Denver (1) vs Miami (OH) (4)
Duluth (2) vs Princeton (3)
The WCHA Regional if you will. Denver finished second in both the race for the MacNaughton and for the Broadmoor. They have Tyler Bozak back, though I wonder how a guy who hasn’t played for months will adjust. He could have a hat trick or be completely ineffective. Duluth has arguably the hottest team in the country right now, riding the goaltending of Alex Stalock and timely goal scoring. It wasn’t so long ago they choked away two games at home to UAA though. Princeton doesn’t belong in the NCAA tourney. Miami (OH) backs into the NCAA tourney just like Ohio State, just that they actually have a decent team.
Denver and Miami (OH) pits the teacher against the student. Miami’s coach played and coached under Gwoz in the past. Denver didn’t look great last weekend, but they have the talent to win the regional. I’ll pick them to get past Miami. Duluth is hot, and I think riding an impressive five game winning streak, they can take two more games this weekend. I think Duluth punches a ticket to the Frozen Four and have a legitimate reason to raise at banner at the DUMP next season. There is always the “misc wanderings” factor when Stalock is on the ice though. Will he do something stupid that costs his team the game?

Notre Dame’s Regional to lose this weekend. The won the CCHA regular season and playoff titles (if that impresses you) and were jockeying w/ Boston U most of the season for the top spot in the polls. Northeastern has had a great season for their program. They finished second in HE during the regular season. I think they could be a darkhorse to make the Frozen Four. Cornell is the 3rd ECAC school to make the tourney. Bemidji received what I believe is the last CHA autobid ever. I wouldn’t count this team out. They played tough against several WCHA schools this year included a couple one goal losses to North Dakota.
Notre Dame and Northeastern should make an interesting Regional Final. I’d have to cheer for Northeastern in that contest, but I think Notre Dame makes their second straight Frozen Four. Might be there last for awhile if all their talented recruits keep decommiting and heading to the OHL.

This will be my first Frozen Four in two weeks, I can’t wait! The Final Five was a blast; I expect the same from the Frozen Four just w/ more fan bases to mingle w/. Does American International or Merrimack send huge contigent of fans?
In the end I think Boston U and Duluth win their semi-final games. Boston U wins another National Championship in a close game w/ some great goaltending.
I feel like I’m betraying the WCHA by picking BU, but I wasn’t impressed w/ North Dakota or Denver last weekend, and for how hot Duluth is, I don’t think they quite pull it off. Coming into the playoffs, teams need to be riding high, but anything could happen in single elimination action.
If DU or UND make it to DC, count me as part of your cheering section.

BC Wins 3rd National Title
Well congrats to BC on the 4-1 win over Notre Dame! They played their best hockey at the right time, like Michigan State did last year, and like our Badgers did two years ago, and took home the National Title after being the runnerup the 2 years previous.
Nathan Gerbe was named Most Outstanding Player, pretty easy choice when a guy gets a hat trick on thursday and adds two more goals tonight, and had 8 points on the weekend. He looked impressive.
Felt bad for both teams having Todd Anderson as the referee, and later to find out that Greg Sheppard was the replay official. The disallowed Notre Dame goal was a tough call, probably the first time any WCHA official has put in an honest effort at reviewing a goal all year.

Nathan Gerbe was named Most Outstanding Player, pretty easy choice when a guy gets a hat trick on thursday and adds two more goals tonight, and had 8 points on the weekend. He looked impressive.
Felt bad for both teams having Todd Anderson as the referee, and later to find out that Greg Sheppard was the replay official. The disallowed Notre Dame goal was a tough call, probably the first time any WCHA official has put in an honest effort at reviewing a goal all year.

Frozen Four/Hobey Baker Linkorama
A little late on this one, w/ the game being in 3 hours and all, but here are some links for the championship game and Hobey Baker award.

I'm boycotting INCH and not making any predictions for tonight's game. I apparently jinxed both the lgm and michigan on thursday. Or prehaps both team's goalies were horrible and they paid the price for it?
No real surprise, Kevin Porter was named the 2008 Hobey Baker winner. He would probably rather being playing for the national title though.
The All-American teams were announced and Richard Bachman was named HCA Rookie of the Year. No Badgers made the All-American teams, but I think that will be different next season. Jamie McBain is on the cusp of greatness and I wouldn't be surprised to see Ben Street or Blake Geoffrion having seasons warranting All-American status. I find it funny that Bachman is 1st team All-American and wins this ROY award, but isn't even in the final 10 for the Hobey. Not to rehash past statements, but the Hobey Baker is a joke.

BC/NoDak Frozen Four Semi
Since I'm watching, why not blog between periods.
1st period: BC 4 NoDak 0
JPL does not look good and has already let in 4 goals. Where was this a few sunday's back in Madison? JPL has spent more time diving, anytime a BC player is near him, then worrying about stopping goals.
BC is just faster than NoDak and working harder getting to the loose pucks. Gerbe just blew by Joe Finley for one of the goals shorthanded. NoDak has only really controlled the offensive zone on the PP where they looked pretty good, hit a post, but haven't been able to get one past Muse of BC.
Hakstol stop embrassing the WCHA and get back in the game in the 2nd!

Well the game is out of hand. If the lgm come back from this it will be miracle of epic proportions.
As someone commented during the 2nd, BC is certainly finishing on their plays. Though JPL didn't look THIS bad in Madison in the Regional Final, it certainly could have been 7-0 at the end of the 2nd for the Badgers a few weeks back. I counted 4 posts and the missed chance on Davies' breakaway.
Only 5 shots in the 2nd for the Sioux and they never really looked in sync. BC is giving them opportunities by taking penalties and giving PP chances, but nothing's going tonight. Taylor Chorney took a knee to knee hit (should have been a penalty) and hasn't returned. That is huge, since he is the Sioux's best Dman.
Gerbe, BC, has a hat trick w/ an even strength goal, short handed goal and power play goal. He looks impressive, and really BC looks great tonight.
Final: BC 6 North Dakota 1
Not much more to add. Late goal by North Dakota to deny the freshman Muse of BC a shutout. W/ mustaches that bad, did they really expect to win?
The ESPN announcers are pretty good this year. I like Ray Ferraro a lot more than Barry Melrose, even if he just said "south dakota broke up the shut out".
Now we get to listen to everyone say how the WCHA sucks and didn't deserve 6 bids this season, blah blah blah.

Frozen Four Semis...DROP THE PUCK!
After a weekend off, College Hockey returns to the big stage this weekend at the Pepsi Center in Denver for the Frozen Four. Sure the Badgers aren't there, but why not compile some links about the semifinal games tomorrow evening.
For the record, I'm cheering for North Dakota. Sure I don't like Joe Finley or TJ Oshie much, but they have a great team and w/ all the talent they have they should get over the hump (aka Boston College) this season, and take home the National Championship. On top of that, they are the last WCHA team standing. I'll cheer for anyone from the WCHA except the rodents. The last thing we need is another CCHA team winning the Crown, and talking up their conference like it even compares to the WCHA.
Enough of my blabbering, time for some links.
