The Badger Women are back on top of the standings due to their sweep on the road at St. Cloud, and some help from the Foreign Legion of Duluth who beat minnesota friday night. The Badgers are tied w/ the gophers w/ 36 points w/ 8 games left for both teams. They meet in the Twin Cities Feb 7 & 8 for the series that should decide the WCHA. Duluth is quite a ways back in 3rd place.
As for the Badger's weekend series:
On friday night they won 5-1 over the Huskies behind two Carolyne Prevost goals. Also scoring for the Badgers were Hilary Knight, Brooke Ammerman and Malory Deluce.
To complete the sweep, the Badger Women won a 6-3 decision on saturday afternoon. National goal scoring leader Hilary Knight had a pair of goals, and was joined by Erika Lawler, Anne Dronen, Meghan Duggan and Rachel Bible (who is the first blue liner to score in some time). Angie Keseley added a playmaker (3 assists) to help the team to victory.
TCT covered both games as well: friday and saturday.
The Women return home next weekend for a series w/ Ohio State. It's a saturday/sunday series, so stop out before the Men's game and Super Bowl respectively.

Weekend Review: Everybody Sweeps!
Both the Men and Women swept their opponents this week! Both are also in 1st place in the WCHA, though the Men do have several games in hand, but following the 0-6-1 start, it feels really good to say it.
"It's quite an accomplishment for this group from where we were," UW coach Mike Eaves said. "The thing that we as a staff are the proudest of is the fact they stayed together through tough times and persevered."
I don't have much to add for the Men's series, the beat Alaska Anchorage 3-2 on friday and 7-2 on saturday. Chuck did a nice job w/ the live blog. Nice weekend for the PP going 4-13 and the PK allowing 1 goal on 14 UAA PPs.
On friday night, UAA really came to play out of the gate. Wisconsin owned the 2nd period scoring all three goals, but didn't respond well in the 3rd following Blake Geoffion's injury. I was a little worried saturday night, but the team came to play and really took it to the Seawolves. Nice play all around on saturday, a little lazy late letting in those 2 late goals. Connelly played well all weekend, he's really heating up.
Some other top preformers for the weekend: Michael Davies had a great weekend w/ 2 goals and 2 assists. After calling Cody Goloubef out (in a positive way) last week for playing great w/ out the big numbers, he goes out and has two game winners. Jamie McBain continues to lead the team in scoring adding 3 assists. Finally, Derek Stepan continues to quitely play well on the ice w/ a goal and 3 assists.

The Women's Hockey team remains unbeaten on the season as they head into break at 18-0-2. The Women beat St. Cloud 7-0 on friday and 6-2 on saturday. Jessie Vetter notched her 33rd career shutout in the win friday and the win saturday gave her her 75th victory as a Badger tying her for the school record w/ Jackie MacMillan.
The Women really took it to St. Cloud on friday, they started slow, but had a huge 2nd period. On saturday, St. Cloud brought a much better effort, but were again no match for the best team in the country.
My favorite moment of the weekend was when all the freshman skaters combined for a goal saturday as Brooke Ammerman (the Freshman Sensation) scored w/ assists from Brittany Haverstock (Nova Scotia's finest) and Carolyne Prevost (the Cardinal and White Ninja).
Top performances on the weekend for the Women: Brooke Ammerman had the biggest weekend w/ 3 goals and 2 assists. Not far behind was the top goal scorer in the country Hilary Knight w/ 2 of each. Erika Lawler had a playmaker on saturday along w/a goal.

NCAA Record Set as Badger Women Sweep
The Badger Women went down to Fort Myers, FL this weekend, and come back w/ an unbeaten record and an NCAA record for senior goalie Jessie Vetter. On friday night, the Badgers fell behind 2-1 before scoring 7 unanswered goals, betting #3 New Hampshire 8-2. Earlier today, the Badgers completed the sweep beating New Hampshire 2-0 and in the process, Jessie Vetter now stands alone as the all-time NCAA leader in shutouts w/ 31.
This is just another notch on the belt of one of the best goaltenders in NCAA Women's Hockey history. No reason w/ 16 regular season games (hopefully 7 more beyond that) to play that record can't be raised a little higher giving the next top goalie a mountain to climb to be the best.
While Jessie's record is front and center, 5 Badgers scored 2 goals this weekend. Angie Keseley, Meghan Duggan and Carolyne Prevost had two goals a piece on friday, while Erika Lawler and Hilary Knight had a goal both nights. 11 Badgers had assists on the weekend, including 4 for Duggan, and 3 each for Knight and Lawler.
The Women proudly return home next weekend for two against Mankato, on friday and sunday at 2:05 PM. If you have friday off w/ the Thanksgiving holiday, get to the Kohl Center early and catch two games.

Women's Hockey Review Linkorama
In case you missed it, the Women's team was also in action this weekend against the rodents.
On friday, the Women lost in a shoot-out after the game ended 1-1 after OT. The game goes down as a tie for the WCHA standings. I'd have more to say since I was there, but the Men's game, depleted my brain from friday afternoon.
On sunday, in front of 2,000+ at the KC, the Women came from behind in the 3rd to win the game 2-1. Hilary Knight (aka the Bomb) tied things up after some nice passing by her linemates, and then Tiny Captain Erika Lawler broke in for a SH and eventual GW goal later in the period. It was one of the nicest goals I've seen, and as always, Erika plays like a giant despite her 5' frame. The Badger Women didn't look too good early on, but they brought an awesome effort in the 3rd to net the victory, stay unbeaten, and stay on top of the WCHA standings at 9-0-1. As always, the minnesota women looked horrible just by wearing those ugly jerseys.

Next week the cheaters of Minnesota Duluth come to the Kohl Center Friday (2 PM) and Saturday (11 AM). If you are looking for European female hockey players who have played professionally or are on steriods, the Kohl Center will be the place to see them in the equally ugly bulldog uniforms.
