It's Friday, I'm in Love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

BADGER MEN v. bemidji state: FRI / SAT 7PM
We definitely want to get the crowd into it right away and let them know that this is a tough place to play and somewhere that they are going to hate to come back to. - Sean Dolan

[The Beavers] are hard workers. It’s going to be a challenge and we have to match that on our end. - Sean Dolan

We are 4-6-2 in our league and that’s just not going to cut it. Hopefully we can get two wins here this weekend and get on a roll. - Jake Gardiner [Henson]

I think we have more energy - I don’t want to say we’ve had more of a commitment to defense because if you take a look all year, we’ve played a lot of good games and still lost. Some things just probably went our way and we were tough to play against. - Tom Serratore.

The keys to the game for sure is do the right things, the small things the whole game. We’ve got to go into Wisconsin. It’s a tough arena to play in, and we have to go out there in the first 10 minutes and establish our game and establish how tough we are on pucks and how smart we can play with the puck … Hopefully we win all those little battles and at the end of the game we come out victorious. - Matt Read [Stromgren]
UW: 4-6-2 WCHA, 8-7-3 overall (last weekend 1-2, 3-1 @ uaa)
bsu: 4-7-1 WCHA, 5-8-1 overall (last weekend 3-0, 3-1 v. uno)

Badger
Lines
Per Baggot, Eaves made a couple of changes in the lineup to send a message. Here's how things looked on Wednesday, with Eaves indicating that things may (or may not) change again this weekend. (Baggot hasn't yet posted yesterday's lines.) The top two forward lines are what we've been accustomed to, but the other two are a bit different, with Podge Turbull and Ryan Little switching lines. Gavin Hartzog, who made the trip to Anchorage last weekend but did not play, replaces Jason Clark on the 4th line
Jordy Murray - Craig Smith - Mark Zengerle
Michael Mersch - Derek Lee - Tyler Barnes
Patrick Johnson - Sean Dolan - Podge Turnbull
Gavin Hartzog - Jefferson Dahl - Ryan Little

Jake Gardiner - Justin Schultz
Craig Johnson - John Ramage

Frankie Simonelli - Eric Springer

Scott Gudumandson
Brett Bennett
Baggot didn't say anything about the D or G positions, so I'm assuming the D pairings remain the same and that Goody will start tonight.

BADGER MEN @ uaa : FRI / SAT 10PM
The freshmen definitely have some confidence. They’re learning a lot from Eaver, they’re soaking everything in, which is good, and it’s showing on the ice. We’re getting back to the things we were doing at the very start of the year. - Justin Schultz

Sometimes you can get a little too comfortable in your own rink. We’ve been playing really good on the road too. We’ve played some of our best games on the road, so I think it will be nice to get on the road with the boys and get some wins. - 1st-Star Zengerle [Henson]

It is a process with a young team. Our hand is firmly in the back of our players moving them forward and we're getting there, we're starting to see the things in practice that we need to see with more regularity, and that will translate into game experience. - Mike Eaves

Once you get the ball rolling it tends to keep going in the same direction. So hopefully we can keep pushing it this weekend. It's a long trip up there. But in the end those are just excuses. When we get up there we have to be in the mindset of being ready to go and ready to play. - Tyler Barnes

It's a cool place to go, but you're up at the North Pole pretty much. - Sean Dolan [Evans]

It's Friday, I'm in Love

You can never get enough
Enough of this stuff
It's Friday, I'm in love

BADGER MEN v minnesota-duluth: FRI / SAT 7PM
We want to fix our mistakes. There are a lot of things we did wrong. - Craig Smith [Baggot]

Anytime you're playing the number one team in the nation you get the chance to come out and make a statement, especially after last week. We weren't happy with our efforts, but this weekend we'll see a different team out there for us. - Podge Turnbull [Evans]

That’s the whole message the whole week, we need to compete before we do anything else. - Mike Eaves

[UMD is] way different than NoDak also; they’re more skilled, but we don’t think they work as hard. We watched a lot of video on them this week, and we broke down their game. If we outwork them — which is what we plan to do — and get after their D and get after their smaller forwards. We match up good against these guys. - Jordy Murray

[We did] a lot of hard work in practice this week, doing battle drills, getting dirty in the areas near the net and by the crease. - Michael Mersch [Holt]

The screwing of the pooch begins [tonight]. - ExileOnDaytonStreet

UW: 3-3-2 WCHA, 6-4-2 overall (last weekend v. 0-1, 2-4 v. und)
umd: 6-1-1 WCHA, 9-1-2 overall (last weekend 5-3, 4-2 v. mtu)

This week, JORDY MURRAY won the shootout. (Glad to have you back Jordy, we missed you last week.)

Previous Winners:

10/21 Jefferson Dahl
10/14 Keegan Meuer

(Thanks again to Paul Capobianco.)

Badger
Lines
Baggot mentioned some line changes this week, so here's what things should look like tonight.
Jordy Murray - Mark Zengerle - Tyler Barnes
Patrick Johnson - Sean Dolan - Ryan Little
Michael Mersch - Craig Smith - Derek Lee
Jason Clark - Jefferson Dahl - Sean Little

Jake Gardiner - Justin Schultz
Craig Johnson - John Ramage

Eric Springer - Frankie Simonelli

Scott Gudumandson (8 GP, .928 SV%, 2.12 GAA)
Brett Bennett (4 GP, .940S V%, 1.47 GAA)
Jordy Murray is back, and so Keegan Meuer is out. Podge Turnbull is also out, with Sean Little making his Badger debut. Per Baggot, Eaves said he earned a spot with his effort level in practice and competitive nature.

On the top line, 1st-Star Zengerle has been moved from right wing to center, and the move makes a lot of sense. I'm looking forward to seeing him at C, and I'm also looking forward to seeing Barnes get a shot on that line. Smith will now be centering a line with Mersch and Lee, and his presence improves the look of that line, should be fun.

Gavin Hartzog is out with an ankle injury.

On D, Joe Faust is out (sorry, Ma60) and Eric Springer is back in. In goal, Scott Gudmandson gets the nod on Friday, and as usual we'll have to wait to see on Saturday.

Kyle Schmidt - Travis Oleksuk - J.T. Brown
Dan DeLisle - Keegan Flaherty - Mike Seidel
Joe Basaraba - Jake Hendrickson - David Grun

Mike Montgomery - Drew Olson
Wade Bergman - Brady Lamb
Dylan Olsen - Justin Faulk

Aaron Crandall (5 GP, .920 SV%, 1.78 GAA)
Kenny Reiter (7 GP, .899 SV%, 2.50 GAA)
Looks like Crandall and Reiter have been splitting time as of the 3rd series of the seaon, with each playing one game per series. FWIW, Reiter's stats are skewed by a horrible outing v. Lake State.

(See, Hatchet Joe, I told you Crandall plays for the dogs, I don't know why you never believe me. For those who don't follow recruiting (Hi, Ma!), Crandall was originally a Badger recruit but there were concerns about his development. Long story short, he ended up in Duluth.)

(Another note to Ma60 - I don't want you to waste your time trying to catch a glimpse of Badger alum Steve Rohlik, as he's no longer an assistant at duluth - you'll have to catch an Ohio State game to see him.)

It's Friday, I'm in love

BADGER MEN @ minnesota: FRI / SAT 7PM

There is a lot of history and these are two teams that don't like each other, in any sport. There is a little hatred but that is the way hockey should be played. -- Jordy Murray

These weekends that we have this month are going to be big series, definitely the strongest month of our season. So if we can start it off with a sweep right here it would be huge. We're looking at it like four points we need to have on the road, and we won't be satisfied unless we get all four. -- Sean Dolan [Evans]

It's Friday, I'm in Love

I don't care if Mondays black
Tuesday, Wednesday - heart attack
Thursday, never looking back
It's Friday, I'm in love

BADGER MEN v Michigan Tech: FRI / SAT 7PM
I think Friday was kind of an eye-opener for a lot of guys, for a lot of the freshmen, just seeing how hard the WCHA is going to be. I think the guys saw how quickly points can slip away on Saturday. - Scott Gudmanson

Coming out of Denver with a point is okay, but we’re not real satisfied with that, we felt we let a couple games slip there. - Podge Turnbull

We know that we need four points this weekend, that’s our goal for this weekend. - Sean Dolan [Holt]

We’d like to know a little more about both these teams, so what better way to find out than by having them playing each other in Madison this weekend? The Badgers have dominated lesser opponents Holy Cross and Alabama-Huntsville, but are 0-2-1 against ranked foes Boston College and Denver. A better showing against a quality team would give Wisconsin a boost. The question surrounding Michigan Tech is, are the Huskies a quality team? Off to a 3-0-2 start, Tech is, at worst, vastly improved, and has been scoring goals (24 of ‘em) in bunches. That said, the combined record of the teams they’ve played to date is an underwhelming 3-9-5. The trip to Mad Town will provide a measuring stick. - Mike Eidelbes [INCH]
UW: 0-1-1 WCHA, 3-2-1 overall (last weekend 2-4 and 2-2 @ DU)
MTU: 1-0-1 WCHA, 3-0-2 overall (last weekend 5-2 and 5-5 v Mankato)

Weekly Shooutout Winner
This week, RYAN LITTLE won the shootout.

Previous Winners:
10/21 Jefferson Dahl
10/14 Keegan Meuer

Badger Lines
Jordy Murray - Craig Smith - Mark Zengerle
Tyler Barnes - Derek Lee - Podge Turnbull
Patrick Johnson - Sean Dolan - Ryan Little
Michael Mersch - Jefferson Dahl - Gavin Hartzog

Jake Gardiner - John Ramage
Justin Schultz - Frankie Simonelli
Craig Johnson - Joe Faust

Scott Gudumandson
Brett Bennett

Just one change on the forward lines, flip-flopping Mike Mersch and Tyler Barnes, with Barnes getting a chance on the second line. On D, Joe Faust is in and Eric Springer is out, and the pairings have been switched up a bit. Gardiner remains with Ramage, but Schultz and Johnson have been separated so that each is paired with a freshman. Goody gets the start in net on Friday, and your guess is as good as mine as to who we'll see on Sat.

Husky lines
Bennett Royer - Brett Olson - Milos Gordic
Ryan Furne - Eric Kattelus - Jacob Johnstone
Aaron Pietila - Daniel Holmberg - Alex MacLeod
Mikael Lickteig - Patrick McCadden - Dennis Rix

Deron Cousens - Carl Nielsen
Daniel Sova - Steve Seigo
Tommy Brown - Ricky Doriott

Kevin Genoe
Josh Robinson

Jordan Baker and Anthony Schooley are out with injuries.

Keep an eye #16 Brett Olson. A junior from Superior, WI, he's centering the top line and he's fun to watch until he scores against your team. It sounds like sophomore D Steve Seigo, senior F Eric Kattelus, senior F Bennett Royer, and freshman F Milos Gordic are also playing well so far.

The Huskies have 9 freshman on the roster and, like the Badgers, have 7 freshmen in tonight's lineup. Baggot tells us that they're big, and that's not really a surprise; Tech has always liked the big players.

The Huskies have a tendency to start the season strong, having a better first-half of the season than the second-half. But this year they're starting stronger than usual, as they're undefeated in their first 5 games, giving them their best start since 1978. Despite not having faced any top teams yet, that's a pretty darn good start.

It's Friday, I'm In Love

Saturday, wait

And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate . . .

BADGER MEN @ Denver: FRI 8:30 PM / SAT 8PM

The WCHA is such a league, it doesn’t matter if it’s Denver, Mankato, Alaska, you’re going to get a war right away -- Mike Eaves [Holt]

They are similar to us in that they want to come out and prove themselves. This will be a huge series. WCHA games are always exciting, and every conference win counts. We hope to come out firing right away on Friday, get that first win, and keep it going into Saturday. -- Jordy Murray [Evans]

We have to come out hard. They just got swept by Boston College, so they are going to be hungry for a couple wins especially on their home ice. -- Justin Schultz [Evans]

UW: 0-0-0 WCHA, 3-1-0 overall (last weekend 7-0 and 5-2 v. UAH)
DU: 0-0-0 WCHA, 1-2-1 overall (last weekend 2-6 and 0-3 v. BC)

Weekly Shooutout Winner
This week, JEFFERSON DAHL won the shootout.

Previous Winners:
10/14 Keegan Meuer

Badger Lines
Jordy Murray - Craig Smith - Mark Zengerle
Ryan Little - Derek Lee - Tyler Barnes
Michael Mersch - Sean Dolan - Podge Turnbull
Jason Clark - Jefferson Dahl - Gavin Hartzog

Jake Gardiner - John Ramage
Craig Johnson - Justin Schultz
Eric Springer - Frankie Simonelli

Scott Gudmandson
Brett Bennett

Looks like Eaves has made a couple of changes on the forward lines. Ryan Little and Podge Turnbull have swapped lines. Freshmen Jason Clark, Jefferson Dahl, and Gavin Hartzog all make tonight's lineup, as Michael Mersch has been bumped up to Sean Dolan's line to replace the injured Patrick Johnson.

The defensive lines remain the same. Assuming Joe Faust made the trip, I'd expect to see him tomorrow night.

In goal, Scott Gudmandson gets the start tonight, and I'd expect to see Brett Bennett tomorrow.

As far as extra skaters who made the trip, I know that PJ made the trip and is listed as "questionable" for the weekend. I'm assuming that defenseman Joe Faust also made the trip, but I haven't seen this listed anywhere.

Pio lines
Jason Zucker-Drew Shore-Chris Knowlton
Beau Bennett - Anthony Maiani - Shawn Ostrow
Kyle Ostrow - Jesse Martin - Luke Salazar
Jerrod Memis - Dan Olszewski - Nate Dewhurst

Matt Donovan - Chris Nutini
John Ryder - David Makowski
Paul Phillips - John Lee

Sam Brittain

Baggot had sophomore Adam Murray starting in goal, but Mike Chambers indicates that Murray is injured and that freshman Sam Brittain will get the start both nights.

Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart

Oh, Thursday doesn't even start

It's Friday I'm in love

I've had this song in my head all week. I'm not gonna lie; I love this song and I'm gonna listen to it the entire time I write this post. It's Friday, Badger Hockey is back at the Kohl, and I'm in Love. Go RED!

Weekly Shooutout Winner
This week, KEEGAN MEUER won the shootout.

Badger Lines
I don't see tonight's line-up posted yet. If I see it later, I'll go ahead and edit. In the meantime (per Baggot), here are the lines that were used in practice on Wednesday. (I'm assuming Goody gets the start Friday (Bennett on Sunday) and that the 5th F line and 4th D pairing sit tonight (with changes made Sunday).)

Jordy Murray - Craig Smith - Mark Zengerle
Patrick Johnson - Sean Dolan - Ryan Little
Podge Turnbull - Derek Lee - Tyler Barnes
Michael Mersch - Jefferson Dahl - Gavin Hartzog
Jason Clark - Keegan Meuer - Sean Little

Jake Gardiner - John Ramage
Craig Johnson - Justin Schultz
Eric Springer - Frankie Simonelli
Chase Drake - Joe Faust

Scott Gudmandson
Brett Bennett

Charger lines
I don't see them listed anywhere yet, but hopefully Geof will put them up on his UAHhockey blog sometime today. Keep an eye out for a couple of Geoffrion brothers - freshman Brice wears #5 and sophomore Sebastian wears #22 - and for Wisconsinite Justin Cester (sophomore, #26).

Here's what Mike Eaves said in his weekly presser about the Geoffrion boys: "Well, they play with great energy. They’re energy guys. They play physically hard, a lot like Blake was a freshman with us, he played with great energy and hit everything that moved. They play with that same type of energy."

About Sebastian, Brett Bennett said, "I played with Sebastian in juniors. He was our fighter on our team. He was like a [New York Rangers forward Sean] Avery-type if you can compare him to anyone in the NHL." [Gabriel]

I'm on Vacation, I'm in Love

I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's gray and Wednesday too
Thursday I don't care about you
It's Friday, I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Oh, Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday, wait
And Sunday always comes too late
But Friday, never hesitate...

Gotta go get breakfast, Mr 60 is hungry, and you don't want to mess with a hungry Mr 60. So you're not going to get an It's Friday I'm in Love (not that you've gotten one in the last month anyway, but bygones, etc, and Chuck has been keeping you updated, luv you Chuck! Which reminds me, Chuck, I'm doubling your salary, so that when you give half of it to the contest winner, you won't lose anything. Oh, wait . . . ) But I just wanted to share a few quick thoughts . . .

  1. CAPTAIN ASS-KICKER FOR HOBEY! I'm not gonna lie, I'm more than a little bit in love, here. Blake Geoffrion, I'm in Love.
  2. BOHMBER!! A well-deserved promotion to one of the top lines. Andy Bohmbach, I'm in Love.
  3. JUSTIN SCHULTZ, congrats on the much-deserved naming to the WCHA all-rookie team. the WCHA can be rough on freshmen defenseman, and he's never looked like a freshman out there to me. Justin Schultz, I'm in Love.
  4. JORDY MURRAY, I was supposed to tell you that 11-year old Anna from Rockford says "hi", which she asked me to do after hearing that I had talked to you Friday of 1st-round WCHA playoffs in Madison, but alas, I didn't run into you on Saturday. (Which is really to bad on Sat, as I "was" you on Sat, lol.) Anna and I expect great things from you this weekend! Jorday Murray, We're in Love.
  5. AARON BENDICKSON, BEN GROTTING are two players I really enjoy watching. Gotta love a couple of seniors who play hard every night, especially when their hard work directly contributes to some pretty good results. Dang, aren't they fun to watch play? Aaron Bendickson, Ben Grotting, I'm in Love.
  6. No disrespect to Patrick Johnson (I still luv ya, Patrick), but it was nice to see PODGE TURNBULL get back in the lineup, as I think he's been Gorowsky'd a bit this season. As Chuck would say, it's nice to see him get a fair shake. Podge Turnbull, I'm in Love.
  7. EXILE, I'm in Love. Love you're cheers for this weekend! I knew there was a reason I "hired" you!

BADGER MEN @ Duluth: FRI / SAT 7 PM

“We’re feeling great right now. It has been a tough stretch against some great teams, but it’s been fun and we hope we can keep this up.”

“Road trips are always big. We’re playing in a loud venue and it’s going to be exciting in that smaller rink. Duluth is a great team, they play similar hockey to us, and it’s definitely going to be a battle.”
