The Wisconsin Badgers have been lucky enough to not only have one incoming 2009 recruit on the RBK All-USHL First Team, but two. Madison native, forward Craig Smith (Waterloo), and goaltender Brett Bennett (Indiana Ice), who is a transfer from Boston University, were both named to the first team the USHL announced today.
Smith has had a banner year for the Blackhawks. He finished second in the USHL in scoring during the regular season and has been a leader on and off the ice. Smith, who is in his third season in the USHL (his first season was as a junior in high school), more than trippled his point total from last season. In 54 games this season, Smith has accumulated 28 goals and 48 assists for a total of 76 points.
Bennett, the goaltending transfer from Boston University has been a pleasant surprise for Badger fans. He was outstanding at the NTDP in Ann Arbor but struggled once he got to the Division one level. This season for the Ice, he has an outstanding 35-17-2 record. He currently sports a 2.59 GAA, and a very good .910 save percentage. Bennett, who will be a junior when he enters the Madison campus in the fall, should challenge Scott Gudmandson for playing time immediately.
