Badger fans can officially stop speculating about the possibility of Madison native Mike Johnson walking on with the program. I've learned this afternoon that Johnson, currently the starting goaltender for the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders, has committed to the University of Notre Dame.
Johnson, a former Madison Capitols AAA goaltender, is having an outstanding season for the first place (as of 6:45 CST) Rough Riders. Johnson has finished the regular season with a record of 25-12-1 with a minuscule 2.39 era and a .909 save percentage.
The goaltending situation at Wisconsin has been a bit of a guessing game the past few months. With the Chuck Knoblauch esk play of former goaltending recruit Aaron Crandall, and the incoming transfer of Junior Brett Bennett, no one is really sure what is going on in the nets for the Badgers. Mike Eaves has stated publicly that he would like a third goalie to compete with incumbent Scott Gudmandson and transfer Brett Bennett. Now that Johnson is off the board I think you have to look at a guy like Stoughton goaltender Andrew Martin as a walk on.
