Salmon Arm SilverBacks forward Mark Zengerle has been named the British Columbia Hockey League's Player of the Week for the week ending September 20th, the league announced Monday.
Zengerle, who is the reigning Interior Conference MVP, scored four goals and added five assists in three weekend road games -- all wins -- for the SilverBacks.
On Friday, the 20-year old scored twice and added a pair of helpers in a 9-5 win over the Williams Lake Timberwolves. One night later, he netted a power-play goal and assisted on the tying and winning goals in a 3-2 overtime victory in Quesnel. And on Sunday, Zengerle wrapped the weekend with a goal and an assist in a 7-6 win at Prince George.
The Rochester, New York native now has five goals and six assists to show for his first five games of the 2009/10 regular season. Zengerle totalled 31 goals and 62 assists in just 54 games in his first season in the BCHL.
The SilverBacks return to the ice on Friday when they visit the Penticton Vees, who boast league-leading scorers Denver Manderson (15 points) and Beau Bennett (14). Gametime is 7:00 PM from the South Okanagan Events Centre.

Justin Schultz and the Westside Warriors take 2-0 lead
The Westside Warriors opened up the BCHL playoffs in exhibition round play against the Trail Smoke Eaters this weekend and won both games.
On friday, Justin had an assist as the Warriors won going away 5-1. Things were much closer saturday night as Justin recorded an unassisted SH goal in the 3rd period, and the Warriors went on to win a come from behind game 3-2 in OT. (maybe Justin can bring some of that comeback attitude to the Badgers next year and break this OT futility streak) For his efforts saturday, Justin was named 2nd Star.
The series could be over tonight as the Warriors hit the road for Game 3.
One correction from an earlier post, Justin won the Interior Conf Top Defensmen award last season as well, not Rookie of the Year. So back to back awards for the young blue liner.

BCHL Playoffs set, Recruits garner awards
Last weekend was the final weekend of the regular season in the British Columbia Hockey League. Here are the standings. The good news, all three Badger recruits will have their seasons continue into the playoffs. Derek Lee and the Victoria Grizzles finished as the top seed in the Coastal Conference, and have a bye in the 1st round. Also receiving a buy in the first round are the Salmon Arm Silverbacks where Mark "1st Star" Zengerle has dominated all season. They are the the #2 seed in the Interior Conference.
Also in the Interior Conference, Justin Schultz and the Westside Warriors finished as the #3 seed. No rest for Justin as the Warriors begin their 1st round series against the Trail Smoke Eaters this weekend. GL to Justin and the Warriors!
Scoring wise, 1st Star Zengerle made a great push, but finished second in the league in scoring w/ 31-62-93. He did finish first in pts/game (1.7 pts/game) and assists. Great season for 1st Star! Not to be out done, Derek Lee ended up tied for 22nd in league scoring w/ 12-45-57. He was tied for 5th overall in assists. As I mentioned in an earlier post, he really brought his best late in the season, he was around 55th in scoring about a month ago. Lastly, Justin Schultz finished 5th among defensemen in scoring w/ 15-35-50. Justin led all defensmen in pts/game (1 pt/game).
All three recruits had a great regular season, and two of them received top awards for their efforst. 1st Star Zengerle was named MVP of the Interior Conference and Justin Schutlz was named Top Defenseman of the Interior Conference! Nice work boys! I believe Justin was ROY in the Interior Conf last season.
I can't wait to see all three of these kids in the Cardinal and White, hopefully next season.

BCHL "Stars" Shine
It's been a good weekend for Wisconsin's BCHL recruits.
On friday night, Derek Lee helped lift the Victoria Grizzles to a 6-5 OT win w/ a goal and three assists. For his efforts, he was named 1st Star! He followed this up last night w/ two assists as again Victoria won in OT. His weekend isn't even complete, Victoria plays again today, but a 1-5-6 stat line is a great start.
Justin Schutlz and the Westside Warriors split a pair of games this weekend. On friday, Justin was named 2nd Star while having a lone assist. This isn't the first time I've seen Justin named one of the three stars even though his team lost or he didn't have a big stat line. He must be doing some other things on the ice to make a difference. Last night he was held off the scoresheet, but Westside was a winner.
1st Star Zengerle apparently didn't want to be shown up by his future Badger teammates. While being held off the scoresheet last night, Zengerle made up for it w/ two goals and an assist last night as Salmon Arm won 3-1. Who would have guessed it, he was named 1st Star.
Next weekend is the end of the regular season for the BCHL, most teams have 2 or 3 games left. Victoria, Salmon Arm and Westside are all locks for the post season. Here are the standings.
